A head and shoulders is a topping pattern: three peaks with the middle one highest, resting on a "neckline" whose break often ends an uptrend.

How the head and shoulders works

Price makes a high (left shoulder), a higher high (head) and a lower high (right shoulder), with the lows between them forming the neckline. Each failed rally shows buyers losing strength.

The pattern completes only when price closes below the neckline. Until then it is a warning, not a signal.

Confirmation: A close below the neckline.
Target: The height from the head to the neckline, projected down from the break.
Fails if: A close back above the right shoulder or the neckline.
